Abstract
This thesis explores the problem of surfacing 3D curve networks, a fundamental yet underdeveloped challenge in the domain of 3D shape design. While sketch-based modelling tools empower artists to intuitively define shapes through sparse and unstructured curves, automatically converting these into perceptually valid and topologically meaningful surfaces remains a complex task. We address this challenge through two complementary approaches. For curve networks with well-defined boundaries, we formulate the problem as a minimal surface computation under a shape-aware metric with data constraints. For more generalized and complex inputs, we propose a neural representation that overfits a gradient field optimized with a flow-aligned objective. Our methods enable the surfacing of rough 3D sketches while aligning the resulting surface with the artist’s intent, offering a meaningful contribution to the field of 3D shape design.
