APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR PROGRAMS WHOSE INTERNSHIP IS COORDINATED BY MILA OR WHOSE RESEARCH IS COORDINATED BY A DIRO PROFESSOR AFFILIATED WITH MILA
- These are the following programs:
- Research degrees in the MSc program 217510 involving segments other than segment 77, such as segment 72 (Artificial Intelligence), if the research is carried out at Mila.
- Research degrees in the PhD program 317510 if the research is carried out at Mila
- Degrees from the Machine Learning Professional Masters with stage (217510, segment 77).
- The DESS in Machine Learning (217512).
STEP1 [*ONLY open from October 15th to December 1st*]- For the DESS in Machine Learning (217512) and Machine Learning Professional Masters (217510, segment 77), the first step is to fill in the application form found on smapply.
- For Research programs (MSc and PhD) supervised by a professor affiliated with Mila, the first step is to submit a superivsion request on the Mila website to help you find a supervisor. All instructions can be found here.
- Students applying for admission to programs affiliated with Mila are advised that there will be very little time between the date they are informed of their acceptance to the programs affiliated with Mila and the DIRO deadline. They should therefore prepare their applications to the DIRO at the same time as they complete STEP 1 of the admission procedure, so that they can apply to the DIRO on very short notice. Note that applying to DIRO through the University of Montreal website is a mandatory step, the admission or supervision notification from Mila does not constitute by itself an acceptation to the program.
- Note that students applying to the program 217510 involving segments other than segment 77, such as segment 72 (Artificial Intelligence), involving projects that are not to be carried out at Mila but rather at the DIRO itself, should not follow STEP 1 of the admission procedure. The same is true for students applying to the PhD program 317510 if the research is not to be carried out at Mila.
- The description of how to qualify as a DIRO student is given elsewhere:

https://diro.umontreal.ca/english/programs/graduate-programs/phd-in-computer-science/ - If you are a student interested in programs that are not affiliated with Mila, it is sufficient to look at the sites just mentioned. Some of the information given on the first of these two sites is repeated here, however, for the benefit of students carrying out the second step of their application to MSc programs affiliated with Mila.

The second step is to apply to the University of Montreal (DIRO) as a student in the desired program. Thus, all students, including those applying for Mila affiliated programs, must complete an admission form online on the University of Montreal website. For the professional programs (DESS and professional MSc), the application to DIRO should be done within 4 day after receiving the notification of acceptance from Mila. For research programs (MSc and PhD), the application to DIRO should be submitted after receiving the confirmation of supervision from Mila.
To qualify for the DIRO as a student in the MSc program in Computer Science, the candidate must meet the following conditions:
Otherwise the department may impose additional courses.
It is also assumed that the student has some proficiency in programming (the equivalent of the content of the course IFT1015). This may be crucial for success in some courses, such as IFT2015.
