Résumé:

Logistics providers (LPs) play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient movement of goods from suppliers to consumers. They face the challenge of making strategic decisions in environments characterized by growing and complex customer expectations and intricate capacity management issues. Complicating matters, LPs often have incomplete information about the demand associated with these decisions. Ignoring such uncertainty can result in unprofitable capacity investments and failed partnerships.

This thesis investigates strategic decision-making problems faced by profit-maximizing or cost-minimizing LPs operating under uncertain customer demand for new services, formulated using random utility maximizing models. The thesis is composed of three articles, where the LP's challenges are formulated as stochastic bilevel programming problems, positioning the LP as the leader and its customers as the followers. The articles introduce single-level reformulations that exploit the properties of dual optimal solutions and employ sample average approximation to compute expected utilities. These reformulations enable asymptotically exact solution methods and a high-speed, high-accuracy heuristic.
